Container Ship hit Woodhouse reef

Container Ship hit Woodhouse reef, Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt
The large Vessel ran aground on Woodhouse reef, destroying much of it

The vacationers are having fun. Egyptian workers there were even unaware of what has happened right in front of their nose

The tight spot in the strait of Tiran

And old wreck, left to rot some years back. Some divers hope that the container ship will stay on the reef and from a new diving ground. Beyond words for me....

Last Monday a 260m long Chinese Container Ship tried to go through the narrow passage of the strait of Tiran near Sharm el Sheikh.

Nobody officially knows why this ship tried to go through there, since it is obviously way too big.

It hit the Woodhouse reef and is stuck there now.

The damage to the reef is yet unknown (officially), but I mean, go figure.

There is NO news coverage of this incident.
None.
Silch.

The only people reporting it are the divers and the dive magazines.

Quote from Divemagazin.co.uk:

An area approximately 30m wide and 20m long has tumbled away in sections down the steep slope of Woodhouse Reef like an avalanche, destroying any living coral below to a depth of at least 45m. At 35m you can clearly see a large slab of reef plate that used to be near the surface.’

I bet, if there was an oil spill, news agencies would be all over this, no?

Here’s some footage on Youtube:

Obviously the guy with Captain before his name didn't earn the title.

Great Captain isn't he? pffft. You are so right, if millions of gallons of oil went into the water of course it would be covered big time. How stupid some people can be. Thanks for sharing this :)

So sad. So stupid. I wonder why there is no coverage. Too embarrassing? Not a big story?

Somebody screwed up, that's for sure. The ship was huge! I did not hear any news of this here.

Makes me wonder how he became Captain but then again there may be a legitimate why the accident happened but since the news is not reporting we may never know the "official" reason. Keep us updated Nicole this is real interesting!

I've just put this on the google map (Click on the Sharm goes Green one, google doesn't give you direct links no more :( ):
Map

To me, it doesn't look like there would be a passage AT ALL.

The ship is gone. They pulled it out:

The damage to the reef is still there though :(

This is a rather sad thing to see, but given the amount of traffic passing Tiran it's not really much of a shock. There's plenty of space for large vessels to get through, assuming their steering is responding! Glad to hear it has been refloated. I hope the owners see fit to compensate Sharm for the damage to one of its main tourist attractions!

I didn't realize that there's so much traffic going through there.
And if there's compensation, well, we can all figure where that money will go to ;)

I doubt it will 'heal' quickly, Gary.
And yes, we are lucky no oil was spilled.

I know. When I went there, everyone acted like "ship? what ship?"

They towed it out a few days after I took these.

Now they try to get money from the captain who claims that the authorities made him go further away from the coast line, because Mubarak was in town...
