Cuckoo, Kuckuck, Cuculus canorus

Cuckoo, Kuckuck, Cuculus canorus

Length: approx. 30cm Family: Doves around from April - Sept

Common in forest, woods and trees along fields, but also in march and dune landscapes.

Most people know what the cuckoo looks like, but most haven’t seen him.

He lays his eggs in other birds nests which makes him unique in our bird world.

There are a lot of old folk tales about him: That his calling tells you about prosperity and sometimes the Life expectancy. Songs talk about him as the bringer of spring.

Small birds attack him,not because he lays his eggs in their nests, but because he looks similar to the sparrow hawk which is one of their enemies.

Cuckoo, Kuckuck, Cuculus canorus

It's so hard to get good shots of birds in flight but you always manage it. Great photo, Nicole!! :)

I always thought Cuckoos were smaller than that. I realize that it's because I've only seen them in cuckoo clocks, and of course a 30cm bird would not fit easily in a small cuckoo clock.

How interesting to read this just now, Nicole. There have been stories on the news over the last couple of days about a worrying fall in numbers of cuckoos in Britain - perhaps evidence of those folklore links between the cuckoo and prosperity... :-/

Hi Janice,
nope, most likely the decline is in less space in our unfriendly environment and problems during migration I bet :-/

How lucky you were to not only see one in the wild, but to capture it in flight!
