Is it THAT expensive?

Does a smile and a friendly Good morning cost you your soul?
Sometimes people seem to think it does.
Especially Western Expats here in Kuwait.
How often have I met some now, greeted them friendly and they just stared at me like I’m growing green antennas.

This morning again. I had a nice walk with the dogs to Fahaheel, the way to was quite empty. On my way back there were more people (5 a.m.).
One Western couple comes my way, I look at them, they look at me. I smile and say Good morning. They just stare and walk by. Assholes.

My perception and my humble opinion. Sorry.

If you are by any chance out there, reading this, maybe you wanna react different next time. I don’t know what your problem is. Is it a crime these days to walk alone as a woman?
Are you afraid I’m gonna steal your husband or I’m gonna get you arrested for harassment when you say “Good morning"?

I stopped at the Yacht Club to take some more shots of the rusty boats at the shore when they walked by again. I didn’t say nothing and they only gave me a quick glance. I think I saw a smile on the woman’s face, don’t know what kind.

I’m still angry. The peaceful mood I had while walking is gone.

It’s just beyond me why so many Western Expats are seem to be so bitter.

You see them when you go shopping. Sour faced and not happy.
1 out of 5 greets you back. 1 out of 10 might even talk to you.

I just don’t get it. Maybe because it’s just so not me.
It’s already hard enough for me NOT to greet everyone or smile at everyone. I know what that leads to. I’m married. No, I don’t want to give you my number ;).

We saw a Lady with a Chocolate Labrador girl too. But she was running and didn’t want to stop. Understandable. At least she gave me a short “Good morning” nod.

I hope you all have a better start in the week. I will look at my pictures now and hopefully get some of that peaceful mood back into my mind. I already feel better. Thanks for listening ;)

Those Expats are getting "Kuwaitize" as in act like every Kuwaiti which really bothers me! Kuwaiti's aren't so friendly too nowadays! Down here I just love saying hi to this japanese lady as I come back from school! She just nods :P I guess she doesn't know any English :P

Well I know when I lived in the big city it was rare for people to acknowledge anyone but themselves. Out here in a small mainly farming community everyone says hello and most engage you in a friendly conversation about the weather.
The weather is the only thing here really to talk about I guess.

I think being in a foreign country makes people more guarded about exchanging a few pleasantries. I used to smile and try to greet people too (by default, I'm told I smile a lot, which I'm trying to work on), but got traumatised by the lack of response, so I stopped it too. I admit that it feels terrible though, to say good morning and get nothing back.
When I was in the US I got a bit overwhelmed though. Seems like small talk is an art over there. Or maybe I was just in the touristy areas. :D
I am simply shocked that they didn't fall into the charms of King and JoJo! There must be something wrong with them ;)

I honestly don't know how you handle living in an area that is so completely opposite from what you're used to.

That's disappointing. But that seems to be how people are in any city. They're certainly like that here.

I don't know, Linus, maybe they have been like that even before they got here.
I mean, you have weird and unfriendly people all over the planet.
Sometimes it just seems that they just seem to gather here in Kuwait ;).

Well, this is more like a small community, at last here in this area, Ben. And as a Westerner you stick out anyway. I don't expect everyone in a big city to say "Hi" to me. :-/

It took me a while to get used to the US version of smalltalk as well, Kala. Now I often use the same phrase "Hi, how are you". Why am I asking / using it, when I know I don't get an answer or people don't care for my answer? I don't know.
Probably cat Lovers that HATE vicious dogs ;)

@Frau Deutlich - sometimes I don't even remember what I am used to.
And now that I try, I think many people in the tiny town where I come from are quite unhappy and unfriendly people as well ;)
Maybe they moved over here?

Thing is, it's not even really a city here, Mrs SR. It is some sort of a community. And I think, I just don't fit in. A tight knit Expat community.
You belong to it or don't.
Oh well, I don't want to end up sour faced, so I rather stay with my dogs and the beach, get wet and dirty and have fun :D
