Blossoms in the desert

Sunrise Sharm el Sheikh January 25th 2010

Nah, actually I didn’t go to the desert, I admit.
I just strolled around the compound this morning
and found an amazing Beauty of tiny blossoms.

I could imagine they could be in the desert
after the rain as well though.

I also found some ants. They are HUGE!
And they endlessly carry tiny sand corn after tiny
sand corn out of the tunnels to build whatever it is
that they are building.
Amazing.
In that one picture you can barely see the
sand corn that front ant is carrying.
Those things were fast - and they knew exactly I was there.
Sigh :)

That round thing is some sort of a fruit that you can
dry, grind up and it supposedly somehow makes your skin
softer.
They sell them at the Old market.

The ground looks weird in some places.

And the last one, just in case you missed
your own sunrise this morning ;)

Btw. it is very windy here.
Supposedly that’s what it’s like in winter.
Not as dusty as in Kuwait, but the tiny fine
dust is everywhere anyway. Blaeh.

The Macro shots are for Lisa’s Macro Monday.
Haven’t taken part in a while, too many birdies :P

Man sagt ja: die Wüste lebt. Überall gibt es Leben und Pflanzen und wenn es mal geregnet hat, dann nutzen sie diese kurze Zeit. Wunderschöne Aufnahmen übrigens von diesen winzigen Blümchen.

Nice shots! This is the type of fotos I want to take...more close ups. I can't get that with my point and shoot, which is why I am looking for a new camera!
Do you take them with a macro lens, or a macro setting?
Thanks!

BG

Well, I haven't missed my sunrise yet. How big is the little pale yellow fruit? It looks tiny.

Thanks everyone - Danke Euch allen :)

@Ballerina girl - these are not taken with any special lens.
It's called a Nikkor AF-S VR18-200mm lens, more or less the allrounder for all kinds of shots.
You get better results with a specialized lens.
And trust me, once you start you want them, but they don't come cheap.

Honestly, my Best macro shots came from my Casio EX-P505 with an inexpensive, but good, Raynox macro lens

Did you check my tips for macro shooting yet?
Until you get a new camera that is?

@BOLGitse - still nothing compared to the dust in Kuwait, at least not down here

Not sure I'm ready for Spring yet. I actually enjoy the cooler temps ;)

It's always amazing how plants and animals can adapt to the most inhospitable and unlikely locations. Even if on this occasion they were only in your back yard! I guess there's a life lesson for us all in that, and we're even seeing some of it in the brave people of Haiti right now.

Great sequence of shots. I love the little flowers you spotted. The cracks in the earth are almost like a tiled floor. The sunrise is spectacular.

Having lived near a dessert myself for years, I find the flowers and the crawly critters quite familiar. I will forever marvel at the birds though. Those we did not have.

I am sorry to hear about your winds, but I am glad they aren't too dusty. Protect your camera workings!

Great shots, Nicole!
The little fruit is a "desert melon", Citrullus colocynthis. The crushed fruit is mixed with oil and used as an anti-rheumatic rub.

It's amazing what you can find with a little walk around. We have ants here that are called paver ants that do the same type of thing. It must be a lot of work for those tiny things. I love the plants and little flowers that manage to survive. Nice job on the macros Nicole and on all the photos...Michelle
