Caspian Tern, Raubseeschwalbe, Sterna caspia

Caspian Tern, Raubseeschwalbe, Sterna caspia

This Beauty I’ve seen at Ras Mohamed on Monday.

I only got this one shot since my camera started acting up (again).
Keep your fingers crossed that I solved the problem with a firmware upgrade.

Find out more about Caspian Terns on Opus at Birdforum.

I learned via the helpful people there, that the Caspian Tern can have a lighter plumage on the head in winter, or when it’s the first plumage.

I am fascinated by all the terns we see out here (7 species close around here) and the Caspians stand out from all the rest because they are so much bigger. Very nice photo.

@Quilly - Thanks :)

@Mick - Yepp, the huge wingspan and the colour of the head did let me rule out the Tern at first.
Wish I could have gotten closer :>>
This was my first Tern EVER B)

That is such a cool photo Nicole! That lone Tern with the blue and green ocean expanse is beautiful.

Surely there was another tern around, since I have heard that one good tern deserves another.

Thanks everyone :)

XX(

Nichole: I do like to see gulls and terns as they fly and soar in the air. I'm changing my header to one later today.

Nice bird Nicole :). Your camera might be clogged with fine dust or moisture, by the way I look at where you usually have taken the picture.

Great shot, Nicole. I love the optical illusion at the horizon line, as well. it looks like a rogue wave coming.

Hi Nicole, Have returned after the flu and various backlogs! Sorry to hear the camera is playing up. Hope it's resolved very soon - and without you having to send it away.

I love Caspian Terns, they are so big! I am also happy to have found your blog, and look forward to seeing more photos from Sharm. I visited there very briefly for a scuba holiday a few years ago and only managed to bird very shortly. Looking forward to seeing what I missed. ;)

Thanks everyone - I sure hope my camera is fine too.
Since there's no way to ship it anywhere from here.

I don't trust APO with electronics and the next Nikon dealer is in Cairo :(
