This little Beauty has been on our compound (and once I’ve seen one on the golf course) in October this year.
It took me a while to capture some half decent shots of him and even longer to find the right ID :>>

European Roller, Blauracke, Coracias garrulus

Height about 30cm and a 52-58 cm wingspan.

The plumage ranges from iridescent blue to black and chestnut.

Their flight usually is slow unless it’s breeding season. Then they have a dramatic flight show with twisting and turning, hence their name ‘Roller’.

His call can be noisy, a harsh, grating ‘krr krar’, especially in flight.

He occurs in open woods or farmland with large trees, nesting in their holes.

Das ist aber ein wunderschöner Vogel. Vor ein paar Tagen hab' ich hier einen Eichelhäher gesehen, aber leider hatte ich keine Kamera zur Hand.

Thanks everyone - he is an intriguing coloured fellow :)

@Dan - I have not seen him mentioned to be in the US, but maybe he has a cousin there ;)

Sweet shots...I've only ever had brief and rather distant looks at a roller so your looks made me jealous!

A new one for me - I thought it was rather drab in the first photo, but then the wings showed the beautiful colors.
