Circling Cormorants

Great Cormorant, Phalacrocorax carbo, Kormoran
Click for bigger

These guys were circling around the sky over the golf course on Jan 8th.
And around.
And around.

Does anyone know why they seem to love to just circle?

They did it with the whole flock and in pairs and single.
Many rounds.

Will do, fickleinpink - thanks ;)

Their circling is as innate as the monarch butterfly's flight path. How is it they fly in the first place? Driven by nature. Fascinating stuff and great photo! Keep on advocating for these winged wonders!

Their fishers, aren't they? Maybe looking for signs of fish? Or crocodiles? Or wanting the lady with the camera to get a nice shot.

i like ur picture.freedom's understated but the image of those birds does it justice.. :)

why they circle? air lift perhaps? it's like recreating a baby typhoon with their wings, they move the air in the same area n it propels them upwards... or somehting like that :P

I clicked on the lovely photo to enlarge, and that's when I noticed they are really people with wings flying around. That being the case, I would guess they are circling because they are waiting for clearance from the air control tower. : )

I know that some birds do that to look for prey. Why ever they do it, this made for a great shot. Happy weekend.

I see you posted on the bird forum. I was going to say they were enjoying the thermals like hawks or vultures, but I don't know for sure...

I would agree with the last comment that there would have to be good thermals there. Nice photo!

...interesting. We don't have many here. Every now and then one shows up. I've never seen so many swirling together in the sky. I'd love to!!

Nice shot of the Great Cormorants against the blue sky Nicole. I believe they are riding the thermals, probably just for the fun of it or teaching their youngins!
