Namaqua Dove (male), Kaptäubchen (m), Oena capensis

Namaqua Dove (female), Kaptäubchen (w), Oena capensis

The other day on another attempted walk with the dogs (it’s still hot and the constant honking is quite annoying), back on our compound I saw these tired fellows sitting on the wall.
Luckily I had my camera with me :)

I’ve never seen them before,nor heard of them.
They are fairly small with a fascinating long tail.

One of the things I love about most places we end up in is, that I can do so much of my beginner birding without going far from home :>>.

More Info can be found at Opus & many thanks once again for the cool people there helping me ID these Beauties :)!

And some more Info on Wiki

They look quite different from the doves here. Do they coo?

Doves, a symbol of peace and a bird I like to eat. It fills me with mixed emotions.

I've never seen nor heard of these doves before.
They are not even in the two bird books I have.
These seemed to be a bit tired and didn't make any sound at all.

@Dan - There are plenty of normal doves here.Be my guest :)

Even though they look quite different from the mourning doves I see everyday it's funny how they all seem to sit in the same fluffed up pose.

Interesting doves. I was curious to find out if namaqua doves are related to mourning doves (Zenaida macroura), birds I'm familiar with as they nest in my garden, so I looked them up. They do look a little alike but they are from different families.

I enjoyed reading this post!

It's so annoying to hear noises and get trapped in a traffic jam. Sometimes I envy the birds that can fly and get away from it all.

They are prety Doves. And much different then the Mourning Doves I am use to seeing. The neck area reminds me of a Black Bellied Plover.

Looks like there are a lot of birds out there. The honking can get very very annoying. When I visit India, I always wake up to the honking early in the morning. Can't really sleep much!

How lucky to be able to see a bird that is not in a book hard to ID without a book.

Thanks everyone :)

@Stine - yes,mourning doves have the same long tail, but these are much smaller. They looked like tired featherballs :)

@Serline - Maybe that's one reason I love birds so much :)

@Eileen - I wasn't sure what they were, I thought Plover or dove...but couldn't make up my mind :D

@Scriber - here it's mainly the honking AT you when they drive by that gets me.
Yesterday a water truck driver almost crashed into a roundabout monument because he was so busy looking at the dogs and me while honking at me at the same time that he missed to break...

@Larry - not too hard to get new species for me, since I just started ID-ing / birding :>>

@Neil - I have two small books. This one should actually be in the big Colins bird guide. I have the small one for Gem birds and one (not overly great one, but it helps) for Egyptian / Middle Eastern birds.
