Not the greatest shots of this fast Fisherman, but with the distance I had to deal with (approx. 50m or more), I am happy with what I got (plus, I shot with the wrong ISO all day, without noticing, sigh) :)

Pied Kingfisher, Ceryle rudis, Graufischer

This Kingfisher is up to 25cm tall and has a black and white plumage.
His crown feathers form a short crest.
The male has a double and the female a single breast band.
He is often to be seen in the open.
He hovers and dives from a height to catch fish.

The shots depicting the power dive are cool! We have Kingfishers here as well, and they are interesting to watch.

Oh my gosh..what a treat to see a kingfisher diving it and what photos you got Nicole. I think they are great. Do you fisherman make a sound as they dive. Our belted kingfishers make this loud 'cak' sound as they dive. Great post for Nature Notes..thank you.. Michelle

I don't know how you get those shots. I've tried seeing that you've done this and it's hard for me. Practice practice practice I suppose. Love the photos :)

It looks like the Kingfisher missed his catch, but you got some excellent shots!

I still do action photos on automatic. There isn't enough time for me to think between clicks.

Maybe not the greatest shots, but I don't know how you got any at all! They fly so very fast and your shots are in great focus. Good work indeed.

This is a beautiful set of photos showing us moment by moment the fishing ritual of the Kingfisher. I've never seen this bird in my region, therefore your post is especially interesting for me :-)

Have a delightful Sunday!

Nice sequence, Nicole. My favorite individual photo is at the fourth down, where the bird has just turned and started downward. The photo conveys the power and speed of the dive.

A very nice sequence of action shots. I have been surprised at the variety of food most kingfishers actually eat. I frequently see kingfishers here out on the sandbanks eating crabs.

What a great ringside seat you had for this, Nicole. We have kingfishers too but they're red and blue ... and I've never seen one!

Great series of kingfisher shots! Here in California, kingfishers are so skittish, it's hard to get a picture of them.

Thanks everyone!

The red and blue ones are skittish.
We had those in Hungary and I only caught them about two times and that only blurry :>>

These are real posers in a way - give you enough time to spot them and follow their actions.

Excellent series of the Pied Kingfisher doing what they do best Nicole. They are such amazing fishers and your series shows them off well.

The Belted Kingfisher here in California is very skiddish as Bob stated. I have gotten one or two photos of them but I'm still trying to get that really good shot.

Last summer I found a Belted Kingfisher nest site and hope to get some photos next year. I will need a boat or kayak as the nest is in a bank of the Sacramento River only accessible by boat.
