Pied Kingfisher, Ceryle rudis, Graufischer
(Click for bigger)
Not the greatest shots of this fast Fisherman, but with the distance I had to deal with (approx. 50m or more), I am happy with what I got (plus, I shot with the wrong ISO all day, without noticing, sigh)
Pied Kingfisher, Ceryle rudis, Graufischer
This Kingfisher is up to 25cm tall and has a black and white plumage.
His crown feathers form a short crest.
The male has a double and the female a single breast band.
He is often to be seen in the open.
He hovers and dives from a height to catch fish.

I still do action photos on automatic. There isn't enough time for me to think between clicks.

@Thom, yes, practice, .... and luck....and a decent lens.
With a tripod and a few mm more....

Very nice feeding shots. Never mind the wrong ISO setting.

The red and blue ones are skittish.
We had those in Hungary and I only caught them about two times and that only blurry
These are real posers in a way - give you enough time to spot them and follow their actions.
The Belted Kingfisher here in California is very skiddish as Bob stated. I have gotten one or two photos of them but I'm still trying to get that really good shot.
Last summer I found a Belted Kingfisher nest site and hope to get some photos next year. I will need a boat or kayak as the nest is in a bank of the Sacramento River only accessible by boat.
