I would like to ask you to join me in a little challenge, if you want to.

I will take and post various versions of black and white pictures over here this month.
The posts will contain some Info on how I took them, or processed them with the help of my various Photo books.

The shot you see above was taken in Regensburg, Germany in October 2008.
I switched it to b&w and added a Lomo effect.
I hope that this month I will learn how to do it better.

My challenge to my fellow Photogeeks out there is to gather information about b&w photography and share what you found with the Rest of us.

Including your new photos :)

Deal?

Well, I’ll do it anyway, so, see you then ;)

Participants:

Quilly already has her first tip posted and here her second

Janice posted two tutorials last year 1 and 2

John posted Tutorials - Converting Color Images to B&W I and Converting Color Images to B&W II

Dave and Bill are playing along.
Bill has a second one, a beautiful cutout

Amanda shows some beautiful lights

Thom shows a gorgeous Portrait

You can also visit Monochrome Maniacs for more beautiful b&w Photography

Okay bear with me here. LOL. Does the photo have to be in Black and White and do we only do one post sometime during the month of January? I've never done one of these. Beautiful photos my friend :)

Thanks, Spark :)

@Thom - You can post as many pics as you want.
They can be originally taken in b&w or in colour and then converted to b&w.
You can edit and play with it at the computer.
You can play with lighting.

What my idea behind this is, that you look up some Info on b&w photography and use it in your upcoming shots.
Or use the Info that you found while editing your photos :)

Very cool project...I will try to participate. I grew up when b/w was it, and then came color...a special effect. Now it is reversed and b/w is a special effect. I guess because of the fifties, journalism b/w always seemed some document....some evidence of something. So factual. Color pics were candy versions of the facts. I will work on this. Later.

Oooookay... I'm not all THAT interested in B/W photography... so I don't know how much I'll find... I remember back when ALL photography was B/W - I was NEVER so happy as I was when color FILM came out! LOL! Until of course everything went digital! Now EVERYBODY's a photographer! :)

Interesting challenge. I'm game. I will be posting at least one detailed tutorial about how I convert color images to B&W during the month. I do most of my work with B&W film but I have been converting some of my color images to B&W.

If I understand this. When I have my tutorial up, I come back here and post the link?

I also just started experimenting with B&W conversion from my color photos this week, and posted my first to Monochrome Weekly. I will work on a blog later this month sharing what I learned. I use Lightroom for mono conversion. One thing I've learned so far is that many color photos lack contrast in B&W when first converted. I need to increase contrast for a snappy mono image. Good luck!

Will see what I can do during the month, Nicole, although my own preference is for colour. I did a couple of tutorials last April for converting to B&W and leaving a focal point in colour. My own technique for working with the layers has moved on a bit since then. If you're interested they're here:

Firstly, HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!!!

I am no photographer, but I know what I like.

I like what you did to the photo and it looks vintage to me. Like a photo from years ago.

I like it.
