Human Rights Watch has appealed to Saudi Arabia to halt the execution of a woman convicted of witchcraft.

In a letter to King Abdullah, the rights group described the trial and conviction of Fawza Falih as a miscarriage of justice.

The illiterate woman was detained by religious police in 2005 and allegedly beaten and forced to fingerprint a confession that she could not read.

Among her accusers was a man who alleged she made him impotent.

Human Rights Watch said that Ms Falih had exhausted all her chances of appealing against her death sentence and she could only now be saved if King Abdullah intervened.

Earlier, her interrogators blocked her access to a lawyer and the judges, and denied her the right to professional legal representation, thus depriving her of the opportunity to cross-examine the witnesses against her.

This will be worth watching. I don't think the King will intervene. It would be a dangerous thing, for him as a 'man', to allow a 'woman' any kind of right or freedom above her station. It would set a bad precedent - it would be an erosion of the dominant position of men over women in the Arab world. I find Arab men to be narrow-minded, egotistical idiots as they relate to women.

He did intervene in case of the gang raped girl (http://rainmountain.wordpress.com/2007/11/21/attention-to-what-deserves-attention-2/) a few weeks back.
But only after international pressure (which I'm sure had NOTHING to do with his decision).

Wow, it's like reading history from hundreds of years ago! I can not believe there are still witch hunts! I certainly hope there is intervention to prevent her being punished for such absurdity.

One "witch" got arrested a while back here in Kuwait for carrying "witch tools".....

Punished is a mild understatement for going to sentence someone to death.

I know. Here, freedom is taken for granted. Sad. (and disturbing)

Yepp, but even in our countries our freedom can be over quick.
Just imagine you or your husband getting arrested for being a terror suspect.
Or me and mine, because we have been in the Middle East for a while.....
Anything can happen now these days :(

Saudi is not known for its tolerant position regarding women...doesnt matter what they are trying to do....drive cars or make men impotent....

i personally feel if she thought the man deserved it....he probably did...lol

Insane. I wonder if things will ever change?

Do you know when this execution is due? How long does the king have to respond?

@Sally

Nope, no ideas.
I tried to find more, but all I found so far is link leading me back to the article.
I've tried to contact BBC to get a link to the human rights group they mention, but no reaction either.
:S
Will dig again today, maybe I find something.
