Down the memory lane
By NicoleB on Aug 11, 2008 | In *Life - Leben, Germany (in between) | 3 feedbacks »
I just remembered one of my teachers in 1st to 4th Grade who always told us about Missereor and who started getting us in touch with some pen pals in Africa. Herr Zech.
“My” pen pal asked me after a few letters if I could please send him a bike. I think I quit contact after that.
The same teacher always picked up the Lunch time breads out of trash cans and gave us a long speech. I don’t think I ever threw mine away. Loved eating too much ![]()
I also remembered that from 5th grade on I used the school books that the school provided instead of buying them every year.Money was tight. But some class mates tend to look at you awkward when you do. I never dressed in all those fancy clothes neither. Just not possible. Up to this day I hate throwing clothes away. I’m weird ![]()
In 6th grade or 7th we had a wonderful arts teacher. He was a big tease too though. He saw me once on the market in our city with our Yorkie. From then on he always asked me how that Toilet brush of ours is doing ![]()
I don’t remember his name,it started with a “B” though and he loved smoking a Pipe. He died a few years later ![]()

I’m not good at remembering things, but for whatever reason a few are coming back.
Mayen - Jewish school

During my childhood people lived in this building.
I’m not sure if this building is city owned, but it sure falls under the category “Denkmalschutz".
A law that prohibits the owner from tearing down the building or changing it from it’s original architecture.

As kids we played with the kids from the family that lived there (if I remember it right - my best friend has a better memory
).
We were totally unaware that this building once had been a Jewish school.
We lived right around the corner in the street where the Synagogue has been (not aware of that either - at least I haven’t been).

In 1873 the Synagogue (now these days around the corner) bought the property.
In 1875 they built the simple school house with an apartment.
Some time in 1875 it changed from a private into a public Jewish school.
In 1908 it changed ownership to the public civil community (?).
Renovated in 1920 by a teacher named Albert Levi.
Used as a school until 1938.

I have posted this originally in December 2004.
It was a tour through Daegu a friend of mine and I did that day.
We visited the Confucius school in town (there’s another, bigger one farther out).
We were lucky to get there in time to see a tea ceremony.
