Trash in Sharm el Sheikh

Trash in Sharm el Sheikh

After seeing my pictures of a beautiful and clean Sharm el Sheikh, Lou left a comment the other day, that this place seems to be so much cleaner than Kuwait.

Nope. Not the case.
I just haven’t shown the trash yet.

Like Kuwait, trash is almost everywhere. In front of houses, piling up in streets, flying around.
And it’s polluting the desert.

Trash in Sharm el Sheikh

One trash dump is at Naama bay, just outside, where the mountains start.
Some if it seems to get burned.

Trash in Sharm el Sheikh

A lot of it is just blown back to the streets by the the strong winds.

Trash in Sharm el Sheikh

Sharm going green? I don’t see it yet.

The government made a law at the beginning of this year that bans plastic trash bags.
Nobody is enforcing the law. At every supermarket they still hand out a bazillion bags.

Before the so called “Swine flu” they had goats and pigs roaming around those trash dumps to eat the trash.
They ate a lot, including plastics.
Then they killed all pigs, because the “Swine flu” scare.
The goats can’t handle all the trash and now they have a “little” problem.

Animals eating your trash? That’s your solution?

There is a group of Expats who meet once a month to clean up Sharm.
I admit, I haven’t partaken in one of their Clean ups yet.
Maybe I’m just burnt out by all these governments, no matter where we go,
that don’t really do anything to protect nature and the environment.
Maybe I’m burnt out by the stupidity of humans.
I don’t know.

Agreed, Thom |-|

@BLOGitse - I know. The goat / pig story I got from the Cairo news :(
I think you got a good point there.

People actually called the "Clean up Sharm" group and asked them to come to their house and clean up the trash in their front yard

People here on our compound put the trash bags over night in front of their doors for the Housekeeping guys to pick up in the morning.
Cats, dogs and rats are happy about that U-(

I'd read that a lot of the trash was building up but hadn't seen it first hand. (Our neighbourhood is still quite tidy despite the recent problems.) I think it's so nice that a bunch of expats are trying to help. wow

@Quilly - mine too. It seems humans are never able to learn and see what's going on.
We are ready to be wiped out in the not so far future and I honestly am getting to the point where I say "Good riddance" :(

@Typ0 - there was a good article at "Daily news Egypt" a while back with pictures from Cairo.
It's sickening.
This is harmless compared to what some people up there have to live in U-(

Yepp, that the Expats grouped together is amazing.
One good thing for them would be to announce all their projects not only in English.
I think, they need to spread the word in Arabic as well.
Maybe people don't mix them up with "Trash men" then any more?

This article is from the Seattle Times. Can't find the one from "DNE".

Why do people destroy their surroundings? Terrible, no sense for nature. I must admit there are many places in the big European cities where it's the same. I sometimes can't understand humans.

It is quite discouraging, for sure. It is a big problem in lots of places. Good for the ex-pats, perhaps their activities will be a visible model for people in the city to clean up their act. When they are just resigned to the situation as a perpetual status-quo, then government finds it easy to ignore it as well. Those in power seldom respond effectively unless there is constant and insistent demand.

@April - yes, sadly it still happens all over Europe as well :(

@Dan - one of the main problems here is, that many people here grew up in poor conditions, others grew up with people around them doing anything for them. From cleaning to picking up the trash.
To many people here, these conditions are nothing out of the ordinary.

It is - thanks to tourism - getting way out of hand though.
And in Cairo, well, that place is simply overpopulated, I think :(

Sadly, humans are selfish and messy everywhere. I don't know how we can convince people to take care of our planet...but let's not give up trying. ;-)

I'm shocked to see the mess there.

Oh my gosh..how sad that is. Where do people think that all the trash goes? I am sorry that they killed all the pigs due to fear of the H1N1 virus.. So much misinformation out there....This is so sad....

It's the same thing everywhere, it only looks different and gets different coverage. It's a shame, no doubt.

@Stine - I don't know.
I think, I did :(

@Poet - Yes, we are perfectly good at that :'(

@Doug - True, should be nor surprise.

@Scriber - Ugh fits it.

@Moosh - Many humans are a sorry bunch.

@Michelle - I don't think many people here actually think about the trash.
Like they don't think where the food comes from that they eat.

Killing all the pigs was pretty weird.
Now they have to deal with the consequences.
But having pigs and goats eat the trash can't really be the solution....

They even have many schools still closed. :**:

@Caron - sort of true.
It got a bit better in some places, because of pressure.
But these third world countries (and trust me, I hate to call them that, but sometimes they deserve it), are a f>:XXg mess :|
