We collected around 60kg of waste (which will be recycled) at the clean-up yesterday. We only had a few Volunteers, but we can call it a successful day.
There’s still more rubbish around, mainly small bottle caps and such – I call this beach now bottle-cap beach
.
There were still some birds around. Some are 1st year birds which come for the summer and some are breeding here in Kuwait. Greater Flamingos among them.
The guy at the last few pics was an official trash picker-upper that came along to do his morning chores (I suppose) and who was obviously flustered at what happened ![]()
The family in one of the shots thanked us whole heartedly and seemed a little embarrassed that we were doing this.
Bird count:
White-cheeked Tern (1st summer) – 5
House Sparrow – 26
Common Myna – 2
Greater Sand Plover (1st summer) – 4
Slender-billed Gull (1st summer) – 1
(Eastern) Reef Egret (dark form) – 3
Greater Flamingo – 29
Bar-tailed Godwit – 1
Kentish Plover – 3
Species Total: 9
PS:
Until the sponsors / organizers come up with some decent pages with information and a bit more initiative to promote these events (except for K’s path and their team who do a great job of organizing and promoting these events and always have a team on the ground), I will refrain from mentioning who sponsored this or what their program is called etc. I want to see a bit more willingness from their site to promote this efforts and get more people to join us. They have the means. Until then, I won’t mention them again.

You guys are amazing giving up your FREE time to make life better for EVERYONE! I really hope they do “play it up more” so ya’ll can get more volunteers and more exposure for your efforts! SINCE this world belongs to all of us I Thank you for cleaning up My Earth!!
Thanks, Sondra.
I wanted to bring in the ‘One world’ aspect – but I forgot. As usual my short term memory & my brain that can concentrate one one thing only for a short time, got in the way
But that pretty much sums it up ‘ONE world – not MY world’:)
Great shots and I think it’s so good you can get together with others for the big clean up.
It’s a shame this is needed – how hard is it to put your trash in a trash can? But good on you for helping fix what others have broken.
i still applaud your efforts every time! i hope the organizers/sponsors will get their act together to help!
Wow, great initiative dear Nicole!! I wish I were there to help too! Hopefully mankind will learn one day not to throw away waste in nature, that would be a good achievement. Unfortunately parents and schools don’t emphasize that enough lately…
Well done you! At least people are becoming aware of the problem.
I live in the town that invented polythene and the placky bag … so am so aware of the problems. We were once so proud… how times change.
I wish more people thought like you Nicole – one world indeed.
Brava Nicole. I was not clear why the Guinness would provoke such a reaction (Green Woodpecker, 10,000 Birds), but now I see you in dry Kuwait. I occasionally visit the Kingdom and have always struggled to find somewhere easily accessible to go bird-watching. If you have any suggestions for someone staying downtown with no transport, I would be grateful. Better still, if you have a litter picking party going count me in on that.
Regards,
Simon
Will send you an email
I know you’re preaching to the choir, here, but YAY!
It’s great that you had that good of a turnout without much publicity…they have beach cleanups here in OR and in FL and I still don’t think they get enough participation even with a lot of PR.
Great job and cool that you saw so many birtds at the same time.
[...] we went to the same spot last weekend for the beach clean-up I counted around [...]
