On a cold morning in February 2009 near where we live in Hungary, I encountered these fellows sitting in a tree.

Going through my archives yesterday, I stumbled over this blurry shot and had a closer look. Asking the guys at ‘Birdforum’, I got my confirmation. Another Lifer, ticked from my armchair ;)

Remember that Robin from 2 days ago? Yesterday I saw another ‘strange’ new bird in the hood. At home I looked at the (30 photos I tried & failed of this shy fellow), compared them to my Bird Guide and figured it’s a 1st winter White-throated Robin. What a difference a year makes :D

This was a typical case of Lucky :) I went out for the doggy round and I made it a habit to take my camera with me most of the times. I was thinking of leaving it at home and reminded myself: It’s migration time, take it! And so I did.

And I came home with a Lifer: a male White-throated Robin :)

This fellow was hopping around and greedily munching on insects. I would have gotten some better Close-ups had my dogs not decided to get on the loose and hunt a poor kitty cat. That’s what I get for letting them roam the slightest bit. Pft,….

But I am happy :) There was probably another one, but I only saw a glimpse and it could have been the Common Redstart that has been in the ‘hood since a few days.

I am done with the over 700 photos I took last week, at least with ID-ing the birds. I still need to do some deleting of those files. And another round is waiting from Saturday, only 250 or so. I wonder if I ever get my big project of going through all the files in my archives done? ;)

The name in German resembles the English name. The Latin version though indicates that this fellow is Iranian and very vocal?

His height is about 16-18cm and he breeds on dry, rocky slopes, often above 1000m with dense bushes and scattered trees. He winters in E Africa and is very a rare vagrant in N Europe. His ‘home’ is from Turkey to Afghanistan. He is rather shy, but he sings from an open perch and occasionally in gliding. His food is mostly insects and he nests in bushes or low in thick-foliaged trees and lays about 4-5 eggs.
