This was one lucky catch during migration last year here in Kuwait.

And one of those moments again where I’ve wished for a longer lens ;-)

Despite this fellow supposedly being a very common summer visitor and resident that even breeds here in Kuwait, I’ve only seen one of them this once (Info from Birds of Kuwait). Regarding that site, they seem to breed on an island that is close to the development of a new harbor. And if I got the news right, the development of that island is being eyed as well. That would be a big blow for the biodiversity here in Kuwait, in my uneducated humble opinion. But humans never learn, do they?

Hop on over to my fellow Bird Lovers and take a peek at their world birds!

Welcome to the land where endangered species are killed just for fun.

This one most likely by a sling shot.

I don’t know if we had a breeding pair here, or if this is the bird that has been around for months.

Another one bites the dust

It has been an awesome 3 days.

Monday morning I went to ‘my’ beach, knowing there wouldn’t be many birds around. But it’s a place where the dogs can roam and I still have my fun.

Boy, was I wrong.

It was not only the common criminals, like the Barn swallows that flew by so close that I could have touched them.

Nope. Many Red-backed Shrike (over 20), Chiffchaff, Yellow Wagtails,…. and a few that I haven’t been able to ID. I was wishing for a Pro birder to be there with me and tell me what is what. I was totally at awe.

Red-backed Shrike

The photo bottom left looks to me like the Shrike is asking the Laughing dove for directions: ‘Hey Dude, where’s the next Rest stop?!’

Yesterday was less Shrike action, but I saw my first Lesser Grey Shrike, Common Redstart, Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, Spotted Flycatcher, one lone Immature Cormorant,….

And today started with a Spotted Flycatcher on our balcony. That simply made my day :-)

The weather is turning warmer hotter and it’s getting humid. Hence,my picture quality the last days pretty much sucks. But we are not in for a contest, are we? ;)

I did quite some beach cleaning too. I couldn’t helped it. Mother Nature really yelled at me, thrusting trash bags in my face to tell me to get my lazy bum going and work a bit for the Beauty she shows me. Righty. Got the message,… :)

A few peeves from the past days:

  • how is it I can observe a bird and even pass close by when I don’t have a camera with me
  • but the bird takes flight a) as soon as it sees my camera or b) as soon as I point my lens its way, no matter how far away it is
  • or I actually DO get close, but that little critter turns it’s head or doesn’t show me any ID-able features

Grmbl……!
